The Russell, Lauren and Wolfy story
Met in Perth
blah blah blah
As I’m writing this, my car is having a service. You know the feeling – low level anxiety, bracing for some bad news, nails bitten to the quick. And it’s all because of a tiny dog.
She’s called Wolfy, she’s 9 and she’s a chihuahua mixed with… well we don’t know what. My wife Lauren and I don’t have any kids yet so Wolfy is the centre of our life together.
I’m in Darwin at the moment. Lauren (and Wolfy) have been up here for work and I’ve come to join them. It’s August, a great time to be in the Top End – Darwin Festival is on and, is it’s the Dry Season, the city is buzzing. Not a cloud in the sky, palms bending in the breeze, the Arafura Sea sparkling in the distance. But it’s all about to end.
You see, we’ve discovered that Wolfy doesn’t like flying at all. We flew up from Sydney in June and took one look at her when we collected her at the airport and decided that a return flight wasn’t an option.
So – it’s on. A huge road trip. About 4000kms from Darwin to Sydney. We’ve had a look at the map and have the route figured out: Katherine, then Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, Port Pirie, the Clare Valley and then through Horsham and country Victoria, ending up in Sydney two weeks later.
I’m going to be presenting for ABC Classic FM along the way too, and discovering the best of music making in regional and remote Australia.
